    Los últimos datos de Naciones Unidas reflejan que en India la tercer parte del agua disponible en la región no es potable y la que se cree que lo es, tiene posibilidades de estar hasta un 70 por ciento contaminada. Debido a esta necesidad, la entidad encargada del abastecimiento de agua en Nueva Dehli, junto a una empresa y una fundación benéfica, han instalado una planta potabilizadora y quince expendedores de agua con los que los habitantes pueden cargar hasta 20 litros de agua por un precio total de cinco centavos de dólar.

    La instalación de estos cajeros ha logrado no sólo que más personas accedan al agua, sino que este acceso esté ahora más organizado y el agua a la que se accede sea de índole más potable.

    Muchos millones de los niños más vulnerables del mundo siguen enfrentándose a una muerte evitable, viven sin agua potable ni inodoros y no pueden ir a la escuela. La experiencia ha demostrado que la construcción de un mundo más pacífico, próspero y sostenible comienza con una inversión inteligente en la infancia, especialmente en los niños más desfavorecidos y marginados.

    Del 13 al 16 de julio los líderes mundiales se reunieron en Addis Abeba para la Tercera Conferencia Internacional sobre Financiación para el Desarrollo. En la cumbre, se analizaron las formas de financiar los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS), el programa que sustituirá a los Objetivos de Desarrollo de Milenio, que concluyen a finales de 2015.

    Invertir más en la infancia y hacerlo de manera más inteligente, sobre todo en la población infantil más marginada, debe estar en el centro de los debates.

    Según un nuevo informe del Panel de Recursos Internacionales del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (PNUMA), el mantenimiento y la recuperación de los ecosistemas sanos serán fundamentales para el cumplimiento de la Agenda de Desarrollo Posterior a 2015 de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU).

    A medida que aumente la población mundial y crezca la clase media, será fundamental que la gente adopte patrones de consumo, y que los gobiernos y las empresas adopten sistemas de producción que contribuyan con el bienestar humano “sin poner presiones insostenibles sobre el medio ambiente y los recursos naturales”.

De cara a esta necesaria búsqueda de equilibrio entre lo económico, social y ambiental, se buscan diferentes maneras de acercar este nuevo paradigma a la gente.

    Una manera exitosa de acercar los conceptos de lo sostenible a la gente son los festivales ciudadanos, donde a través de actividades muy variadas, como charlas, talleres, música, teatro, cine y gastronomía, se tocan diferentes temáticas sustentables: separación de residuos, vida saludable, energías renovables, cambio climático, salud ambiental y eficiencia energética.
